Village Streets and Township Acreage
Tree Service in Caledonia covers two kinds of property. The Village of Caledonia is small: about 1.34 square miles of land and 1,622 residents in 2020, with M-37 (Cherry Valley Avenue) forming its eastern edge. Around it, Caledonia Township stretches out into farms, woodlots and newer subdivisions about 15 miles southeast of downtown Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids Tree Service Pros works in both, and the jobs are different enough that we plan them differently.
In the village
Caledonia was settled in 1838 and became a village in 1888, so many homes near the center have old shade trees: sugar and silver maples, oaks, and a few survivors of elm and ash. Those trees grew up with the houses, and their roots run under sidewalks and driveways. Work here is mostly clearance pruning, deadwood removal and careful sectional removals where a tree is too close to the house to drop. We keep cleanup tight on small lots and leave the street clear.
In the township
Out on larger parcels, the common calls are:
- Clearing storm damage from woodlots and fence lines
- Removing dead ash that are now brittle and dangerous to fell
- Thinning or replacing overgrown spruce windbreaks
- Opening up long driveways for trucks and emergency vehicles
- Grinding stumps after removals near the house
On acreage, not every dead tree needs to come out. A dead tree back in the woods with nothing under it can be left for wildlife. We focus on trees that can reach homes, barns, drives and fences.
Roads, ditches and permits
Outside the village, roads are maintained by the Kent County Road Commission, and a Road Commission permit is required for any work in the county road right-of-way. If a tree falls across the traveled road, call the Road Commission at 616-242-6950; their crews move it off the road, and the wood is left for the property owner. When a roadside tree on your frontage is dead and leaning toward the road, it is worth dealing with before it falls on a passing car.
Seasonal timing
For most deciduous trees, late fall to early spring is a good pruning window. Oaks should not be pruned from April 15 to July 15, per the Michigan DNR, because that is when oak wilt spreads through fresh wounds. Dead and broken limbs can be removed at any time of year.
Ash that died years ago
Many Caledonia woodlots and fence rows had a lot of ash before emerald ash borer arrived. Trees that died ten or more years ago are now brittle, shed big limbs without warning and can break unpredictably when cut. They are harder to fell safely than a live tree. If dead ash stand within reach of your house, drive or barn, they belong at the top of the list.

Caledonia Questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in my Caledonia yard?
For a tree on your own property away from the road, normally no. Work inside a county road right-of-way requires a Kent County Road Commission permit. Inside the village, check with the village office about trees along village streets.
Should I leave dead trees in my woodlot?
Many can stay. Dead trees with nothing valuable below them provide habitat for birds and wildlife. Remove the ones that could hit buildings, drives, fences or paths.
My spruce windbreak is dying from the bottom up. What can I do?
Lower limb loss is normal as spruce rows close in, but browning that moves upward often points to disease or stress. Dead trees can be removed and the row replanted in stages so you keep some wind protection.
Is it cheaper to remove a dead tree now or wait?
Usually now. Dead trees get more brittle each year, which makes them harder and slower to remove safely. A tree that could be climbed today might need a crane or extra rigging in a few years.
