An 1847 Town With Mature Trees

Tree Service in Zeeland takes place in one of the older towns in the region. Dutch emigrants led by Jannes Van de Luyster arrived in 1847 and named the settlement after the province of Zeeland; the town was platted in 1849. The city sits on a slight hill above the surrounding township, about 24 miles southwest of Grand Rapids and 5 miles east of Holland, with farmland and forest beyond. Grand Rapids Tree Service Pros prunes and removes trees in town and on the farm-edge parcels around it.

Who to call about power lines

Zeeland has its own public power utility, the Zeeland Board of Public Works. If branches are touching the lines that serve your home, contact Zeeland BPW before anyone works near them. Utility-side clearance is their job. Once the line is safe, we can prune or remove the rest of the tree.

An older population, older trees

Census figures show 21.7% of Zeeland residents are 65 or older. Many have lived with the same trees for decades. Old maples, lindens and oaks along in-town streets often have deadwood, cavities or roots lifting walks. We explain what each tree needs and let you decide whether to prune, monitor or remove.

Two storms that reached Zeeland

The April 3, 1956 F5 tornado formed at Vriesland, just east of Zeeland, before tracking northeast through Hudsonville and Standale. And on May 31, 1998, the derecho that crossed West Michigan at about 80 mph appeared on National Weather Service radar sweeping from Walker to Zeeland at 5:21 AM. Big storms are not frequent, but when they come off the lake, open ground around Zeeland gives trees little shelter.

Hemlocks and other evergreens

Zeeland is in Ottawa County, part of the state's hemlock woolly adelgid quarantine since its expansion on August 1, 2023. Hemlock trees and forest products cannot be moved out of the quarantine area to other parts of Michigan, with limited exceptions. If you have hemlock hedges or specimens, check them in winter for white, woolly tufts on the twigs and ask us about handling the material if one has to come out.

Farm-edge properties

Outlying parcels in Zeeland Charter Township are mostly farmland and forest. On those lots, common jobs are clearing storm damage from tree lines, removing dead ash, and thinning overgrown windbreaks.

Planting on the hill

Zeeland sits on a slight hill above the surrounding township land, and higher ground in town can drain better than the low fields outside it. Well-drained spots suit species that dislike wet feet, such as many oaks and conifers, while low wet corners suit swamp white oak, river birch or red maple. When you replace a tree, choose one that fits the space at maturity, and keep large trees well away from overhead lines and foundations.

Zeeland Questions

Who handles branches on power lines in Zeeland?

Zeeland Board of Public Works, the city's public power utility. Call them first for anything touching or near the lines. We can take care of the rest of the tree afterward.

Can I take hemlock branches to a relative's place outside Ottawa County?

The state quarantine restricts moving hemlock material out of the quarantine area, so it is best to keep it local. Chipping on site is a simple solution.

My street maple is lifting the sidewalk. Can you fix that?

Root pruning to repair a walk can destabilize a large tree, so it needs care. If the tree is in a city right-of-way, check with the city first. We can assess whether root work is safe or if removal makes more sense.

Do you work outside the city in Zeeland Township?

Yes. We serve farm-edge parcels and subdivisions in Zeeland Charter Township as well as homes in the city. Rural lots often need windbreak work and dead ash removal.
