Lumberton, Then Wayland
Tree Service in Wayland reaches into northern Allegan County along US-131, south of the Kent County line. The area's first name was Lumberton, after Colonel Isaac Barnes bought land along the Rabbit River and ran a mill turning out lumber and wooden shingles. It was named Wayland in 1868. Today the city covers about 3 square miles with 4,435 residents in 2020. Grand Rapids Tree Service Pros serves homes in the city and the rural properties around it.
Allegan County and the hemlock quarantine
Allegan County is inside Michigan's hemlock woolly adelgid quarantine, which was expanded on August 1, 2023. Hemlock trees, nursery stock and forest products cannot be moved out of the quarantine area to other parts of Michigan, with some exceptions. Hemlocks are a native tree of cool, shady ravines and are often used as screens in yards. If you have them, check the undersides of twigs in winter for small white, woolly masses. When a hemlock has to come down, we keep the material local by chipping on site.
Rural lines and the co-op
Some rural homes around Wayland are served by Great Lakes Energy, an electric cooperative, and Allegan County is on its 2026 vegetation management schedule. The co-op runs right-of-way clearing on a cycle of about seven years and asks members to leave pruning near overhead lines to its crews. If you are not sure who your utility is, check your electric bill before calling about branches on a line.
Along the Rabbit River
The river that powered Wayland's first mill still shapes the trees near it. Low, wet ground favors silver maple, box elder, willow and cottonwood. Those trees grow fast but form weak forks and brittle limbs. Regular deadwood removal and weight reduction on long limbs keep them safer near homes. Removals near the river are done in sections so wood stays out of the water.
What we do most
1. Hazard checks on big yard trees before storm season 2. Removal of dead ash and storm-broken trees 3. Clearance pruning over roofs, driveways and sheds 4. Stump grinding after removals, with MISS DIG called first 5. Clearing overgrown fence rows and lot edges on rural parcels
Trees on open lots by the highway
Newer homes along the US-131 corridor often sit on open, former farm ground with a handful of large trees left standing. Those isolated trees catch more wind than trees in a woodlot and are more exposed to lightning. They are worth checking for dead tops, cracks and weak forks, and pruning them before storm season is far cheaper than cleaning up after a failure.

Wayland Questions
Can I move hemlock logs from Wayland to my cabin up north?
Allegan County is in the hemlock woolly adelgid quarantine, which restricts moving hemlock material out of the quarantine area to other parts of Michigan. Keep it local or have it chipped.
Who trims trees near rural power lines around Wayland?
Your electric utility. Some rural homes are on Great Lakes Energy, which asks members not to prune near lines. Check your bill, call the utility, and we can handle the rest of the tree.
Do you grind stumps in Allegan County?
Yes. We call MISS DIG 811 first so underground utilities are marked, then grind below grade so you can fill and seed.
Can you prune a big tree that stands alone in my yard?
Yes. Lone trees on open ground often need deadwood removal and reduction of long, heavy limbs to cope with wind. We prune to industry standards rather than topping, which weakens trees.
Do you work in Dorr and Hopkins too?
We focus on Wayland and the surrounding area of northern Allegan County. Tell us your address when you call and we will confirm.
