Getting the Stump Out of the Way
Stump grinding is how most stumps leave a Grand Rapids yard. A grinder with a toothed cutting wheel chews the stump down into chips, usually several inches below the soil line, without digging out the whole root ball. It is faster and far less destructive than pulling a stump with an excavator, and it leaves a hole of chips and soil that can be leveled, topped and seeded. Whether the stump is from a tree we just took down or one that has been sitting by the garage since the last ash came out, the process is the same.
Why not just leave it
A stump is an obstacle for mowers and a trip hazard by a walk. Some species sprout from the stump and roots for years. A decaying stump can draw carpenter ants and fungus, and a large one takes a decade or more to rot away on its own. Most people also want the space back for a new tree, a garden bed or a patio. If a stump is in a far corner of a wooded lot, leaving it can be perfectly reasonable, and we will tell you so.
Stumps in the right-of-way
If a city street tree in Grand Rapids is removed under a homeowner's permit, the permit requires the stump to be ground and the right-of-way returned to its original condition, and it requires public utilities to be located before any grinding. In Michigan that means a MISS DIG 811 locate request before the grinder touches the ground. The city grinds stumps from its own removals in batches, which can take a few months, so a stump left by city crews is not forgotten, just waiting its turn.
Buried lines and private utilities
Stump grinding goes several inches deep and can catch more than roots. Gas, electric, cable and water lines often run close to trees, especially in the strip by the street. The 811 locate covers public utilities; private lines such as an invisible dog fence, irrigation or wiring to a garage or lamp post are not marked, so tell us where you know they run.
What we need to know
Stumps are priced mostly by diameter at ground level, plus access. A grinder for backyard work can fit through a typical gate, but steps, steep slopes and retaining walls change the plan. Surface roots running across the lawn can be ground out too, and that is quoted separately. You choose whether chips stay in the hole and are mounded to settle, are spread in beds, or are hauled away and replaced with topsoil.
After the grind
Fresh chips settle as they break down, so a hole filled only with chips will sink over time. For grass, rake out most of the chips, fill with topsoil, firm it, and seed. If you want to plant a new tree, shift a few feet from the old stump, where soil is not full of decaying wood. The Grand Rapids Forestry Division publishes an approved species list for street trees, which is a useful starting point for choosing a replacement.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost in Grand Rapids?
Homeyou's 2026 Grand Rapids page gives a wide range of $75 to $1,000, because stump size varies so much. HomeGuide puts a typical first stump at $120 to $400, with additional stumps at $30 to $60 each. We measure and quote each stump in writing.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Usually several inches below the soil surface, which is enough for sod or seed. If you plan to plant a tree or set a paver patio in the same spot, tell us, and we can go deeper where the roots allow.
Do I have to grind the stump of a city tree?
Yes, if the tree was removed under a Grand Rapids homeowner permit. The permit requires the stump to be ground and the right-of-way restored. If city crews removed the tree, the city grinds the stump itself, often a few months later.
Will the stump grow back?
Some species, including many maples, poplars and locusts, can send up sprouts from the stump and roots. Grinding below grade removes most of the sprouting tissue; a few shoots may still appear and can be cut or mowed until the roots give out.
